Judy Stein, Executive Director of The Swimwear Association of Florida – Q and A with Judy Stein

The MBVCA sat down with Judy Stein, executive director of The Swimwear Association of Florida, to give the inside scoop on SwimShow Miami Beach and the MBVCA’s Tourism Advancement Program. For more information, visit https://www.swimshow.com/.

1.      Tell us about SwimShow Miami Beach. How was the idea for this event created?

Held every July, SwimShow is the largest, most well-respected and comprehensive catalyst swimwear tradeshow in the industry – featuring all of the central players of the travel industry in one building. Started by a small group of sales representatives back in 1982, the event has grown from just 15 representatives and 30 collections to thousands of buyers from across the globe that come to see and purchase next year’s swimwear trends.

In 2005, The Swimwear Association of Florida brought SwimShow to the Miami Beach Convention Center and coined the term ‘Swim Week’ to describe all of the auxiliary happenings during the event. This year, we celebrated 36 successful years of bringing together the swimwear community and the consumers that love it.

2.      As the event organizer, what are two exciting activities in the works for SwimShow Miami Beach 2019?

First and foremost, having the fully renovated Miami Beach Convention Center available for our use next year gives us the opportunity to create fabulous special events for attendees. For example, one event in the works is the official return of our annual SwimShow Fashion Show, which dishes out all the details for future swimwear fashion trends. We have a few working ideas for new and exciting events in the works, so readers should stay tuned for more surprises! The 2019 dates will be announced later this year.

3.      In your opinion, what makes Miami Beach the ideal destination for a major cultural event like SwimShow Miami Beach?

What could be more harmonious than swimwear and Miami Beach? Our slogan, ‘Swimwear begins in Miami Beach’ holds true each year as we continue to host the most important global swimwear tradeshow with the largest gathering of retailers, manufacturers, press, bloggers, influencers and more under one roof in Miami Beach.

4.      For 2018, SwimShow Miami Beach received funding from the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority’s Tourism Advancement Program. Can you please share how the grant helped the event come to fruition?

The funding that we received from the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority’s Tourism Advancement allowed us to offer an additional evening cocktail party, to expand or breakfast bar food offerings, and helped 2018 SwimShow Miami Beach come to life. We are very appreciative of the support and assistance from the MBVCA.

5.      For those with an idea to host a unique event, festival or experience that celebrates arts and culture, give them two reasons to apply to the Tourism Advancement Program for a grant.

The MBVCA’s goal is to promote the city of Miami Beach on a global scale and providing funding to encourage programs, activities, and events certainly help them to do just that. I would encourage those looking to host a function or experience that celebrates arts and culture to take this opportunity and apply for a grant from the Tourism Advancement Program because it is a huge financial savior and allows organizations present the very best they can without the burden of funding.

6.      In your opinion, what are some of the best ways to experience the true arts and culture offerings of Miami Beach?

I have a genuine love for history, and I am always looking for creative ways to discover the past. With that said, I enjoy visits to The Bass, The Wolfsonian-Florida International University and The Jewish Museum of Florida because I learn so much about the rich arts and cultural history that’s stored in Miami Beach. I would suggest both tourists and locals to try searching Thrillist, Miami.com, Miami New Times and Eventbrite for year-round arts and cultural events available in the city.

Robert Lansburgh, Founder and Creative Director of South Beach Mango Festival – Q and A with Robert Lansburgh

The MBVCA sat down with Robert Lansburgh, Founder and Creative Director of South Beach Mango Festival, to get the inside scoop on the inaugural festival happening in Miami Beach this summer. For more information, visit: https://www.sobemangofest.com/.

1. Tell us about yourself.  What was the inspiration behind South Beach Mango Festival?

I was born and raised in Miami Beach as a third-generation resident and currently live with my wife and kids in South Beach. My grandfather was a well-known hotelier and figure here in the 50’s 60’s and 70’s. He was widely credited with introducing the American plan and Cavalcade of Stars which brought big name acts to Miami Beach. My father, Leonard, and mother Carole, built on that foundation and for many years were in the travel business, David Travel’s.

I currently work in real estate and take part in several community activities. As someone who grew up in Miami Beach, I knew mangos at a very young age, at times inviting friends over to eat mangos from the trees at our home on Normandy Island. In recent years, I’ve made some great connections through Craigslist, with private individuals who sell them, fueling a love of various types of mangos. On a typical week, I purchase as many as 150 mangos for myself and friends. While sharing I discovered that many did not know we grew such delicious fruits, everyone’s reaction “amazing”. In 2017 the Fair Child Tropical Gardens had their Mango Festival early and I missed the festival. With this disappointment in mind and while eating, a Mango I said to my wife “we should have a Mango Festival here in Miami Beach”. I knew I was on to something when my mother and wife both said, “That’s a good idea!”.

2. South Beach Mango Festival is donating a portion of proceeds to Big Brothers Big Sisters. How did you come to the decision of connecting with this specific charity ad why?

Shortly after the decision to proceed with the Mango Festival I asked Allen Susser to join me in producing this festival and he suggested that we involve a charity. A few charities were discussed, but chose Big Brothers Big Sisters because both my aunt Merle and I have a long history with the organization. My aunt was formerly a social worker for BBBS and I at one point had been a ‘big brother’. My ‘little brother’ Steven Abraham often tells me, “you don’t know how you’ve changed my life”. I share this in hope that others might be inspired to be a “Big”.  The kids’ perspective is much different than the adults’ perspective.

3. In your opinion, what type of impact are you hoping South Beach Mango Festival will have on the local community of Miami Beach?

In recent years, the residents of Miami Beach have become distanced from their beloved Ocean Drive. We hope this Mango-inspired event sparks a reason for residents to come back to Ocean Drive. The event is designed to cater to all groups of people and all ages. The fruit theme is sure to resonate with all people who care about health and well-being. Through this festival, we hope to turn people’s attention to hardworking farmers restauranteurs and entertainers that make South Florida so unique. South Florida can arguably claim to be “Mango Capital of the USA”.

4. What are some of your favorite places to visit in Miami Beach and why?

I love venturing into the city of Miami Beach with my whole family. We have 3 favorite parks that we consistently visit. South Pointe Park has a great view with expansive space for our kids to play, including a small water park and play area. Lummus and Flamingo Parks are two other spots that offer beautiful scenery and amenities.

The weekly farmers market on Lincoln Road Mall is a great place to grab fresh fruits (mangos!), home-made ceviche, vintage goods and much more. In addition, the host of open-air restaurants and stores are enough to keep my whole family strolling through for the day.

South Beach overall is filled with so much history, from architecture to culture, the overall island feel makes Miami Beach one great place to live and work.

5. In your opinion, why is Miami Beach the best destination to host the South Beach Mango Festival?

Miami Beach is a world-class destination that caters to people from all walks of life. The Mango aka The King of Fruits, shares the same worldwide acclaim. The two are universally recognized and shall be celebrated in unison. Mango season runs from June through September and is widely unknown to our new residents and visitors of South Florida. The Festival is a whole new front for South Florida and puts mangos in the spotlight… and we all know South Beach can shine a big spotlight.

 6. Miami Beach is home to a wide-array of world-renowned festivals and events such as Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade, South Beach Wine and Food Festival and Miami Swim Week, do you see South Beach Mango Festival becoming a key city-wide event in the future?

Most certainly, yes. The popularity of mangos, and our other locally grown fruits such as coconuts, jackfruit, dragon fruit, mamey and other locally grown fruits is certain to win hearts and minds of residents and visitors at South Florida. With South Florida increasing its reach with new international flights and new residents each year, the Mango Festival will become a part of the summer season. I’m just a simple man that loves Mangos that came up with an idea. Do I think this is good for South Florida, Miami Beach, Mangos, and all mankind? Absolutely. I think I’ll go eat one right now…excuse me 🙂  See everyone August 5th, can’t hardly wait!

Larry Simms, Dawn Lyon and Michael Hamilton, Co-Owners of The Front Porch Cafe – Q and A with Larry Simms, Dawn Lyons and Michael Hamilton

The MBVCA sat down with Michael Hamilton, Dawn Lyon and Larry Simms, to get the inside scoop on what makes Miami Beach an award-winning LGBTQ Destination. For more information, visit: http://www.frontporchoceandrive.com/.

1. Tell us about yourself. What was the inspiration behind Front Porch Café?

We moved to South Beach in 1988 because it was so beautiful, rent was cheap, yet a lot was in disrepair. We were living in the newly renovated Crescent apartments on Ocean Drive and our landlord had covered the alley between the Crescent and the McAlpin Hotel apartments to create a space for a tiny restaurant, which included the front porches of the hotel. We thought we could create a homey space for diners, cultivate a menu that was fresh, home-made and reasonable, thus the Front Porch Café was born! 28 years later and two moves up the block, we’re still here!

2. What are some of the most popular dishes served at Front Porch Café? Which are your personal favorites and why?

We are best-known for how big our breakfast selection is… and that we serve it all day!  pancakes, french toast (our french toast is still the world’s best comfort food), eggs in all forms, fish and shrimp tacos are just some of our most popular dishes. Our favorites are the items we put a lot of effort into like the homemade granola, biscuits with honey butter and jam and breakfast tacos with kimchi. Many moons ago I (Larry) was at a bar on Ocean Beach in San Diego and the bartender asked me if I wanted fish tacos. I told her that was the grossest thing I had ever heard of. Offended, she bought me one… which I ate and loved. That encounter led to fish tacos being one of the hottest items on our menu!

3. Front Porch Cafe is widely known in Miami Beach; how does it feel to be owners of a restaurant that provides such a memorable experience for food lovers and the LGBTQ community?

We are amazed that so many years have gone by since we first opened. Miami Beach has undergone so many changes since we opened and if it wasn’t for the gay community, we would never have survived those early years and for that we are forever grateful! Being a part of the LGBTQ community ourselves, it’s natural for us to embrace how even more diverse Miami Beach has become.

4. As a Miami Beach local, what are three of your go-to LGBTQ-friendly hotspots or events (in addition to Front Porch Café)?

Many from the Front Porch Café still go the places that are mainstay Miami Beach hotspots like Palace South Beach Bar, located just steps away from the bustle of the beach; Balans Restaurant and Bar; in the epicenter of Lincoln Road Mall and Hotel Gaythering; a crowd favorite for us locals and tourists.

5. Miami Beach continues to dominate the travel space as an award-winning LGBTQ destination, with accolades from 2018, 2017 and 2016 editions of the Travvy Awards, as well as the 2017 Magellan Awards. In your opinion, how has tourism and gay-friendly travel improved in Miami Beach since Front Porch Café was opened?

When we first opened back in 1990, Miami Beach was a run-down beach town with a quirky cast of characters. It was fun, but not an easy time to make a living. Gay tourism helped put Miami Beach back on the map. The city now has a large local LGBTQ community and continues to welcome people from around the world. Events like PRIDE Week, restaurants, hotels and businesses show their true support for the LGBTQ community and it shows in such a gratifying and heartfelt way.

6. In your opinion, why is Miami Beach a city like no other place in the world?

Miami Beach is the perfect combination of the beautiful blue ocean, seven miles of white sandy beach alongside streets of unique art deco hotels and the best hotel groups in the world. You’re going to get quite the experience while traveling to the city. Miami Beach is brimming with restaurants, art cinemas, shopping and has a great history of gay culture. Tourists and residents are all diverse, almost every person living in Miami Beach is either from a different state in the US or from a different country in the world… what could be better? We are so lucky to live and work in such a vibrant community smack dab in the middle of paradise.

1. Tell us about yourself. What is your title, and how long have you been part of the event planning team at The Confidante Miami Beach?

I am currently the Social Events Sales Manager for The Confidante Miami Beach and have been in this position since September of 2017. Prior to this role, I was the Director of Banquet at this property, in charge of planning, producing and executing seamless events. I have over 17 years’ experience in the food and beverage experience.

I was born and raised in Venezuela and moved to Miami 20 years ago. Living in Miami has allowed me to experience different cultures and connect with people from all over the world. I love trying new restaurants, entertaining at home and being surrounded by friends, food, and music.

2. Summer is upon us and brides-to-be are in search of the best destination to say ‘I Do.’ In your opinion, what are the key ingredients for a perfect summer wedding?

With Miami Beach as the perfect backdrop for beachside weddings, brides-to-be should consider having their ceremony outdoors. The Confidante’s Vista Terrace overlooks views of the Atlantic Ocean –surrounded by swift palm trees, relaxing ocean sounds, and warm breeze.

For the reception, wedding guests can celebrate in style in our Century Ballroom or Crown Room. These are two of spaces that are constantly in high demand throughout the summer months at The Confidante.

In late 2018, The Confidante Miami Beach will debut the Carmen Miranda oceanfront ballroom, named after the explosive Brazilian samba singer, dancer, and actress. The ballroom’s outdoor terrace and pre-function area overlooking the beach and palm trees is sure to become a favorite among future brides.

3. Preparing for the big day can be immensely stressful. What are some offers available to brides, and their party, at The Confidante Miami Beach? Are there any special packages featuring spa treatments or wine?

Every bride’s day should be special, which is why, as part of our bridal package, we offer a separate private room arranged with professional lighting and customized décor – perfect for capturing pictures with the bride and her “Confidantes” hanging out before the nuptials, as they get their hair and makeup ready.

The groom also receives a private room with a terrace as part of the package –perfect for enjoying a relaxing drink and bonding with his groomsmen. The groom and his crew often indulge in the hotel’s Bourbon Welcome Experience ($475), which includes a sampling of Kentucky’s Best Bourbons alongside bites from its southern-inspired signature restaurant, Bird & Bone. From the drink selection are bottles of E.H. Taylor, Jr. Single Barrel, Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, and Four Roses Elliott’s Select Barrel. Accompanying bites include signature jars with avocado with blue cheese, honey, and almonds; egg salad with Benton’s 12-month aged ham; and Whipped Sheep’s Milk Ricotta with pepper jelly, all served with Heirloom Corn Chips, prepared by celebrated Miami chef Richard Hales.

Lastly, as part of this package, we offer great savings on spa treatments which can be offered in-suite for full-on pampering.

4. In your experience with planning weddings, what is the best and worst part of the planning process? How can brides-to-be avoid mishaps on their big day?

For some brides, the best part may be designing the dress or picking a theme for their big day, but from my perspective, it’s the initial tour of the property because I get to experience first-hand couples being inspired by our mid-century décor with pops of Art Deco.

Our hotel offers the vintage glamour of Miami Beach in the 1950’s, but with the sophistication and amenities of modern day. The entire property is full of personality – the open-air Vista Terrace immersed in nature, the funky and historic 1930s House backyard bungalow, the sophisticated Crown Room library bar and the multi-functional Century Ballroom.

For me, the worst part of wedding planning is seeing what causes brides the most mishaps on their big day: not having a wedding planner to assist them throughout the process. There are so many details that go into planning the perfect wedding, that it keeps brides from relaxing and enjoying their big day. 5. With summer weddings, it’s all about the color scheme. What are some fun and romantic colors perfect for a summer destination wedding on Miami Beach? What makes these colors pop?

A favorite of mine is dusty rose and pastel green. This color combination incorporates feminine and masculine accents for the couple, and it works well with any décor; couples can add touches of white, gold, silver and other soft colors like lavender – essentially a softer version of Pantone’s Color of the Year, Ultra Violet – which evokes feelings of the mystery of the cosmos and intrigue of what lies ahead. We love this combination because it ties in organic, natural and neutral elements together, which are perfect for a beachfront wedding, especially with the lush, tropical backyard we have at The Confidante Miami Beach.

 6. Finally, what can brides-to-be expect from the event planning team at The Confidante Miami Beach?

A professional, dynamic and experienced team that specializes in not only weddings but events of all kinds. The team is friendly, honest, and has relationships with great vendors, planners and beyond. Among them:

·           Something special for everyone – Parrish Designs is one of our regular vendors and an in-demand florist in Miami that’s known for creative and clean designs.

·           Something extra – Simple Rustic is an in-demand rental company that’s known for their rustic and reclaimed wood elements and a close partner of The Confidante Miami Beach.

·           Something cute and unique – Cielito Artisan Pops is a brand that’s available onsite that offers fun dessert tables and customizable DIY toppings.

1. Tell us about yourself. How did you start your career as a blogger?

I started my career as a fashion blogger after designing websites, having a LiveJournal, etc. when I was younger, dabbling in modeling and styling. I discovered bloggers not just documenting their lives with text anymore but with images, specifically chronicling their outfits and that just seemed right up my alley at the time.

2. Miami Beach is known for its vibrant culture! What are some hotspots and hidden gems that you would recommend to tourists that are looking to experience the city’s culture?

I love the whole Sunset Harbour area, there’s a lot of cute retail shops, places to grab a bite and it’s just a chill vibe. When I want to go to the beach, I like to go South of Fifth. Tap Tap is a must for anyone visiting Miami. It’s a perfect example of the mix of culture in Miami.

3. As a fashionista, what do you love most about Miami Beach’s fashion scene? What are some of your favorite boutiques to shop at on the Beach?

I love how much Miami Beach’s fashion scene has grown and how it’s ever expanding. More and more brands are hosting events, doing pop-ups, taking notice, etc. of Miami. I’m mostly an online shopper but walking around the city; there’s always something new to discover. I just discovered a shoe brand called Sabah hosting a pop-up shop at The Standard. One of my favorite hotels in Miami. Their shoes are perfect for Miami in every way. Earlier I mentioned the boutiques in the Sunset Harbour area, but I also love places like The Webster on Collins and of course major staples on Lincoln Road.

4. Miami Beach has a robust food scene that’s always expanding to offer the latest culinary trends. In your opinion, what are three restaurants you’d suggest visitors must try during their visit to the destination and why?

Byblos for delicious Mediterranean style food, Tap Tap for authentic Caribbean Haitian food and a cool island vibe and The Standard for those amazing fries and that view.

5. As an avid traveler, what makes Miami Beach a city like no other place in the world?

Miami Beach is its own little world. It’s attainable but can be luxe, you can live your best life in Miami and not break the bank, or you can ball out and do the absolute most. There’s so much to explore even for someone like me that’s lived here for a while–there’s always a new experience.
