Q and A with Nathalia Arja

logo

The MBVCA sat down with Nathalia Arja, Principal Soloist for the Miami City Ballet, to discuss her love of Miami Beach and how she became a ballerina. The Miami City Ballet is located at 2200 Liberty Ave, Miami Beach. Make the Miami City Ballet a holiday treat for the whole family, as they present George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® starting on Dec. 9. Tickets can be purchased here: https://www.miamicityballet.org/subscribe

What inspired you to become a ballet dancer?

I remember sitting next to my mother as a little kid, while she was teaching her dancers. What inspired my desire to dance was seeing their high energy and joy while executing really hard steps. I was fascinated by moving and what I felt watching them.

Why did you choose to perform in Miami Beach?

Well, when I was 15 I sent an audition DVD to the Miami City Ballet school. They offered me a full scholarship to study in the school. Most students hope to one day join the company. In 2009, I was chosen by the artistic director to join the company as an apprentice.

What do you love most about being in Miami Beach?

I have to say that Miami City Ballet is a lucky company because we are literally across the street from the beach. I love that on my break I can just go enjoy the ocean and relax. But my most favorite thing about South Beach is that you can just about walk anywhere as everything is close by. There are some very cozy neighborhoods.

What can Miami Beach expect with the new season?

Every season is exciting because our repertory is so diverse and this season is no different. We go from Giselle, which is a historic classic in the ballet world, and end up with the world premiere of Alexei Ratmansky’s, The Fairy’s Kiss. Of course you will be seeing great Balanchine ballets as well, so you’ll see a little bit of everything! We also have the open barre series, which is specifically built for arts education in Miami Beach. It’s a program we do only in Miami Beach twice a year at our intimate studio theatre, in which we have guest artists discuss their work while we perform short excerpts relevant to the upcoming programs. It’s definitely a great show for the community and a chance for them to see the dancers up close!

blog1216

What makes the Miami City Ballet a unique company?

Miami City Ballet is unique because it is a medium-large company that despite its size of 50 dancers, remains very united when it comes to support and emphasis on the success of the company rather than the individual. Ever since its inception, this has been at the heart of the company’s message: to have one soul made of a diverse roster of dancers, together under one banner for the sake of producing the art of the dance for the community at both a national and international level.

Miami Beach is known for its art scene, would you agree that performing arts and ballet are becoming more popular in our city?

It’s been so refreshing over the years. I’ve watched the art scene grow and become more diverse. It’s an honor to be a part of the Miami City Ballet which I feel is very important  for the Miami Beach art scene. I’m so proud of that!

A Q&A with Emilie Sobel from Soul in Stilettos

The MBVCA sat down with Emilie Sobel from the popular local fashion blog “Soul in Stilettos”. Emile shares her thoughts on top trends and talks about how her hometown has become a fashion industry hub. See what she had to say, and be sure to check out her blog: Soul in Stilettos.

What influences does Miami Beach offer to the fashion industry? Why is Miami Beach such a desirable destination for fashionistas? What is your take on Miami Beach’s influence on style and fashion trends?

Miami Beach offers so much to the fashion industry. People in this city are so not afraid to be themselves, which is what I love. We are open to embrace our personalities, wear what we want, stay out late, create and just have fun, which is so awesome. The fashion industry is often intimidating and cutthroat, but Miami allows these designers, creators, visionaries a place to kind of let loose and get inspiration from places otherwise ignored.  How could you not be inspired by the people and places of Wynwood? The craziness that is Collins Ave between 21st and 1st.

What fashion trends do you see blossoming this spring?

This spring, I think maxi dresses are going to make a comeback. They never necessarily went out of style, but I think they will be getting a ton of attention. The “boho chic” trend is always one of my favorites and maxi dresses are the easiest things to slip on and style up in warmer weather.

How has Miami Beach inspired you in your career as a blogger and in your collaborations with photographers, models, designers and makeup artists?

It’s almost impossible not to be inspired by Miami and the people in it. When I graduated, I was a little scared to come home knowing I didn’t have “connections” or friends like I did back in high school. Fortunately, there was nothing to be scared of. As soon as I put myself out there, people welcomed me and my brand with open arms, which was so amazing. People I knew from growing up were now working for big PR agencies and other companies that would end up being important to me. I connected with new and old friends, created relationships that started as friendships and happen to be beneficial to my career. Everyone I know in Miami is pretty amazing. These people are hard working, creative, fun and always up for adventure – which is what I love. Because I’ve surrounded myself with career-driven individuals, I’ve been able to wake up inspired every day, wanting to pursue current and new projects all the time. Everyone loves to use the term “never not working,” here in Miami. And it couldn’t be truer. Miami people are constantly looking for new project and opportunities. I love that so, so much.

 EmilieSobelSoulInStilettosFashionPhotographyMiamiStylePhotographer-61

Why do you love Miami Beach?

I love Miami first and foremost because it is home. I grew up here so I’ve seen it change and turn into this amazing city that it is today. It’s such a cool place to be a young, creative and ambitious individual and I think it is so important to surround yourself with things that inspire you. Miami is constantly supporting cool, new projects headed by cool, new people and to me that is so awesome. Miami is only getting bigger and better, what’s not to love about that?

Make Wave for the Future of the Miami Beach Convention Center

— Renovation and Expansion Commences Early December 2015 –

By Jimmy L. Morales, Miami Beach City Manager

Look out San Diego and San Antonio. The Miami Beach Convention Center is poised to make history again. When the renovation and expansion is completed in 2018, the Miami Beach Convention Center will once again be one of the top convention business locations in the country, as it was when it first opened in 1958.

Originally built in 1957, the convention center that spans four city blocks received a facelift that doubled its size in 1989. The aging center’s upcoming renovation is estimated to generate an economic impact of $5 billion over 30 years. When completed, it will offer 505,000 square feet of contiguous exhibit space, a 60,000 square foot grand ballroom, three 20,000 square feet junior ballrooms, 59,000 square feet of breakout meeting spaces, 806 on-site rooftop parking spaces and an additional 12 acres of surrounding parks and landscaped areas.. The project is proceeding as scheduled in December 2015 immediately following Art Basel Miami Beach.

The renovation and expansion of the $615 million project will transform the area into a state-of-the-art convention center and public space that will attract new national and international events and conventions. The new convention center is designed by Denver-based Fentress Architects, in collaboration with local firm Arquitectonica and the Dutch landscape firm of West 8.

The design team has certainly captured the sense and feel of our oceanside community. The new LEED certified design will have a strong emphasis on ocean elements, utilizing sun-shading design concepts and much more natural lighting for the interior — leading to a 20 percent energy reduction.

This will be one of the most functional, state-of-the-art convention centers in the country, as well as a beautiful facility our city can be proud of. We are not only transforming the building, but the entire site by removing surrounding asphalt areas and converting these into wonderful public green spaces for future conventioneers, visitors, and our residents to enjoy. New outdoor public spaces will create improved walkability connecting the center and the city’s adjacent historic cultural district and resorts.

Once renovations are completed in 2018, this transformation will enable the center to keep up with the demands of the competitive national and international convention community.

Folks, we are making history.

Although the economic impact for our restaurants, hotels, attractions and shops throughout the city will be greatly enhanced, we’ve been prudent with costs. The city commission awarded a contract to Clark Construction Group to provide pre-construction services as part of a Construction Manager at Risk project delivery contract. Clark Construction chief executive Sid Jordan leads the efforts for the project. The City contract requires Clark to publicly bid the trade contracts under an “open book” process, to ensure the City receives competitive pricing. The Miami Beach Convention Center renovation and expansion project encompasses the comprehensive renovation of the center to Class-A standards.

There is a guaranteed maximum price not to exceed $515 million and there will be opportunities for further sub-contracting from the 62 primary subcontracts per the city’s request. Clark estimates there will ultimately be up to 300 subcontractors and suppliers involved in the project – many of whom will be local businesses.

The 30-month aggressive building schedule will continue to accommodate many shows and events during construction, including the internationally acclaimed Art Basel Miami Beach, as halls will remain open during construction.

Funding for the Miami Beach Convention Center Renovation and Expansion Project is made possible by a combination of county and municipal bonds. The Miami Beach Convention Center will be completed by mid-2018.

Miami Beach is my hometown and one of the reasons I wanted this job as city manager. I want to leave a legacy to the place that gave me so much growing up, and I could not think of a better gift to a community that has always been about hospitality. The renovated convention center, and its new park, will make our city a cutting edge hospitality destination for years to come.

Miami Spice showcases Miami Beach’s unique and emerging culinary scene

South Floridians still have until September 30th to enjoy  Miami Spice which turns Miami Beach into a city of epicurean experiences and experiments with chefs showcasing a wealth of new dishes, cocktails and desserts to foodies and travelers during the annual Miami Spice event. Miami Beach’s culinary scene has evolved into a sophisticated and daring mashup of four and five star eateries helmed by celebrity chefs including Michael Schwartz, Tom Colicchio, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Scott Conant and Jose Andrés among others. The weeks that span Miami Spice are a great time for foodies to  indulge in new cuisines and  explore the ambiance of a restaurant, sample a range of cocktails or even talk table-side with a chef.

“Miami Spice is one of the best introductions to the Miami Beach culinary landscape,” notes Peggy Benua, Chair, Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority (MBVCA). “During this annual event, those who participate can sample a prix-fixe menu or just try one or two items. But beyond Miami Spice, no matter the time of year, the city has become a real gastronomic destination.” Grisette Roque, Executive Director, MBVCA, says the city’s competitive chefs are all vying to be the best, “It’s really amazing that in such a short period of time, a little more than 10 years, Miami Beach has become a city where people are discovering that our restaurants are exceptionally good with James Beard Award-winners as well as chefs who are also popular TV show hosts at the forefront. We’ve come a long way and we are all proud of that.”

The guide below is a great place for the adventurous traveler to begin their Miami Beach culinary journey with tips on where to eat and suggestions on what to order:

·         KLIMA Restaurant & Bar: One of Miami Beach’s newest additions is KLIMA Restaurant & Bar. Every Saturday, KLIMA hosts a unique Paella Brunch that includes a unique assortment of three contemporary interpretations of the classic dish which originated in Valencia, Spain.

·         Milos by Costa Spiliadis: For the tapas and small plates connoisseur, this Greek-inspired restaurant is a great choice for the “Greek Ceviche” style Loup de Mer Sashimi, served with fresh & wild herbs of the Mediterranean, gigante beans and the Greek-staple, feta cheese.

·         Red Ginger: For the fish-lover, the Miso Sea Bass at one of Miami Beach’s newest hot spots, is a “can’t miss.”  Made with saikyo miso, spinach, coconut foam and a garlic confit, this sea bass is true decadence.

·         Bâoli: For those with who want to end dinner on a sweet note, the Kisetsu-No Ice Cream at Bâoli is a must. This delicious dessert features an assortment of top-of-the-line seasonal sorbet and ice cream.

·         Social Club at Surfcomber: This eatery is for the mixology buff who also wants a place to play a game of foosball while enjoying a great cocktail. As a night-cap, try the “White Noise and Feedback,” with a concoction of chamomile infused Woodford reserve, fresh pressed apple ginger juice, lemon, honey syrup and Tiki bitters.

Miami Beach goes green: How the city government and private businesses are making the city environmentally friendly

It’s Miami Beach’s Centennial year and one of the city’s primary objectives is to bring attention to its environmental initiatives. A summit during its March Centennial celebrations served as a platform to address Climate change and sea-level rise and provided a forum to discuss some of the most pressing concerns facing the environment while designing strategies to tackle the next century. Not only is the city of Miami Beach checking it’s environmental health with sustainable actions but private businesses like hotels and restaurants are doing their part to up their green game with a wealth of eco-friendly programs and packages. The city of Miami Beach recently invested $15 million in stormwater pumps to mitigate the highest tides on the beach, King Tides.  Pump stations installed last year are expected to minimize flooding — resulting in less standing water for shorter times.

“The city of Miami Beach has really set an example for businesses, residents and visitors, creating an environmentally impactful agenda that demonstrates our present-day and future forward thinking and commitment,” says Peggy Benua, Chair, the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority (MBVCA). “Everyone is putting their best foot forward because we know climate matters, the environment matters and collectively reducing our carbon footprint is important.”

The cross-section of businesses who have implemented green initiatives for residents and visitors are impressive whether those residents and visitors are choosing where to stay, where to eat, what to drive, or what to do for fun. For instance, the newly opened  1 Hotel South Beach has been has been labeled as ‘ultra-glam and ultra-green’ for among other things, its Farmstand in the lobby; fleet of Tesla electric vehicles; 100% organic linens and the hotel’s three restaurants all dedicated to farm-to-table menus. The Z Ocean Hotel has put smart water practices into action, energy conservation programs and waste reduction and clean air practices by installing low-flow toilets with showers and faucets that reduce water consumption throughout the hotel. The Dream South Beach takes part in the Florida Green Lodging program and has instituted programmable thermostats; a linen and towel re-use program in rooms; low flow faucet showerheads and toilets and a recycling program for guests and within hotel operations.

Residents and visitors are also contributing to the environment by doing things they love like… eating out. At Beachcraft by Tom Colicchio, the much talked about new restaurant, Farm-to-Table is the philosophy with a classic seaside grill and an exhibition kitchen that provides a view of the day’s catch as well as farmstand-fresh vegetables. A member of Slow Food Miami, Essensia restaurant focuses on “the pure essence of taste.” Essensia’s culinary team extracts a kaleidoscope of flavors from local, seasonal, sustainable and organic ingredients, creating a fresh and wholesome concept.

The Lincoln Road Farmers’ Market is also a local favorite for its green market which features fruits, vegetables, fresh cut flowers, plants and other items, such as bread, honey, jams and jellies. The market takes place every Sunday on Lincoln Road between Washington Avenue and Meridian Avenue year round. And visitors and locals can get to the Farmers’ market via DecoBike, the city’s popular bike-sharing program which encourages environmentally responsible transportation.
